KHDA: the regulator
All private schools in Dubai are regulated by KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority). KHDA publishes annual inspection ratings for every school, using a six-point scale: Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak, Very Weak.
Always check a school’s current KHDA rating at khda.gov.ae before making a decision. Ratings can change year to year, and a school that was Outstanding five years ago may have a different rating today. The KHDA website is publicly accessible and free.
KHDA also regulates annual fee increases. Schools cannot raise fees beyond the percentage approved by KHDA, which is based on the school’s rating. A higher rating generally allows a larger permitted increase.
Available curricula and who they suit
British curriculum (GCSE / A-Level)
The most popular choice among Western and South Asian expats. Widely available across Dubai with a large number of schools. University applications under this curriculum are well understood in the UK, Europe, Australia, and increasingly in North America.
American curriculum (AP / SAT)
Suits families from North America or planning to return there. Fewer schools than British but a strong presence in Jumeirah and Emirates Hills. The AP (Advanced Placement) track is respected globally for university entry.
IB (International Baccalaureate)
Internationally portable and rigorous. Suits families who move frequently between countries, as IB credentials are recognised by universities worldwide. Available in a limited number of schools in Dubai. Fees tend to be at the higher end.
French curriculum (French Ministry of Education)
Primarily delivered at Lycee Francais International Georges Pompidou (LFIGP) in Al Barsha, which is officially accredited by the French Ministry of Education. Suits French nationals and francophone families. Fees are lower than British or American equivalents.
Indian curriculum (CBSE / ICSE)
An extensive network particularly in Deira, Bur Dubai, Discovery Gardens, and Al Quoz. Significantly lower fees than Western curricula. Strong emphasis on mathematics and sciences. Well suited to families whose children will continue education in India or enter Indian university systems.

Waiting lists and how to apply
Popular schools in the Outstanding and Very Good KHDA rating categories, particularly British and IB curriculum, can have waiting lists of 12 to 18 months for certain year groups. Apply as early as possible, ideally before relocating.
What you typically need for an application:
- Passport copy of the child
- Recent school reports (last 1 to 2 years)
- Immunisation records
- Copy of current visa or a note explaining relocation timeline
Most schools accept online applications through their own websites or via the KHDA portal. Registration fees are typically non-refundable, ranging from 500 to 2,000 AED. Pay these only when you are reasonably confident in your relocation timeline.
For oversubscribed schools, being on the waiting list earlier gives you priority. Some schools give preference to siblings of existing students.
School location and where to live
School proximity is one of the most significant factors in choosing a neighborhood for families. A 20-minute commute to school at 7:30am in Dubai traffic adds up significantly over a school year.
The neighborhoods with the highest concentration of international schools are Al Barsha, Jumeirah, Mirdif, Dubai Hills Estate, and Arabian Ranches. If your child is enrolled or waitlisted at a specific school, choosing a nearby neighborhood dramatically reduces daily logistical pressure.
